Ammonia in hair dyes

🤔 Here’s another interesting post! This time we’re talking about the presence of ammonia in hair dyes.

💄 Ammonia is a cosmetic ingredient used in permanent hair dyes. It is a colorless gas that has a distinctive odor and plays a crucial role in the hair coloring process.

💇‍♀️ This gas is used in hair dyes because it is able to open the cuticles of the hair strands, which allows the dyes to penetrate deep into the cortex of the hair, making it an essential process for guaranteeing longer-lasting and more resistant color throughout washes!

👁️ However, although it is highly effective, ammonia can cause irritation to the respiratory tract, eyes and skin due to its strong odor and alkaline properties.

📃 On the other hand, when used in appropriate concentrations and in accordance with the instructions for use, ammonia is considered safe for most people.

🫣 There are more and more hair dyes that are ammonia-free and use other alkalizing agents, such as ethanolamine, so they are less volatile and less odorous alternatives, although they can remain on the hair for longer, they can also cause irritation.

😁 The choice between ammonia and ammonia-free dyes depends on personal preferences and individual sensitivity, but it’s important to remember that both compounds should be used with caution and in well-ventilated environments to minimize inhalation of vapours, as well as following the recommendations for use to ensure your safety!
