Market withdrawal: Cosmetic with Hydroquinone – Chemical risk

The product contains hydroquinone (1.01% by weight) which is prohibited in cosmetic products. Hydroquinone can cause allergic contact dermatitis and serious eye damage.
Hydroquinone is a skin lightening agent commonly used to treat hyper pigmentation, age spots and other forms of skin discoloration. It acts by inhibiting an enzyme responsible for the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. It is an effective treatment for irregular pigmentation, but it has also been associated with numerous side effects and long-term health risks, so its use in cosmetic products has been banned. It is only permitted to be used in a maximum of 0.02% in UV-catalyzed manicure products.
